A large compilation of diverse and exciting music from new and established artists, VA1+2 is chiefly intended to raise funds for the charity Alzheimer's Research UK. In doing so, it presents material selected from many different strains of contemporary electronic, ambient, experimental, electro-acoustic, improvisation, leftfield pop and beyond. Containing over two hours of music by twenty-two contributing artists, the two discs offer a rich journey through powerful, intricate, playful and unusual material from numerous corners of modern music.
It has been an immense pleasure working with the artists to put this release together over the last year. We hope you enjoy it. Thanks for supporting it in any way.
All profits from this release's CD sales will go to Alzheimer's Research UK, the UK's foremost dementia research charity. "Our pioneering work focuses on prevention, treatment and cure. We are energising a movement across society to support, fund and take part in dementia research. We aim to empower people across all generations through greater understanding of dementia." — The immense range of music on offer on VA1+2 is its real strength... there's a sense that every aspect of this release is about doing the music justice. And in turn, they do the charity and the listener justice. (Aural Aggravation)
— ... these artists and this label have donated their time and efforts to a worthy cause... Hats off to all involved. (A Closer Listen)
— È un percorso lungo due ore, capace di catturare per il suo carattere eterogeneo e stimolante per la sua componente sperimentale. (So What)
— MimiCof a.k .a. midori hirano is a Japanese musician, composer, sound artist and producer, born in Kyoto and now based in Berlin.
— The Makunouchi Bento, or traditional japanese lunchbox, is a highly lacquered wooden box divided into quadrants, each of which contains different delicacies. It is also one of the most familiar images of Japan's domestic environment. Reading the box as both an object and a metaphor, Felix Petrescu (Waka X) and Valentin Toma (Qewza) founded this experimental / electronica project back in 2001.
— "Band Ane" is Ane Østergaard, born 1983. Her music is suspended in an open space best defined by the genres: Ambient / Musique Concrète / Pop / Avantgarde. Her project is a deep and personal examination of how we see ourselves reflected in sounds, and a discovery of how these sounds can be reflected back to us in the course of a piece of music.
— Pιnar Üzeltüzenci aka Biblo is an electronic music composer based in Istanbul, Turkey. Her work has been released by labels such as Nonpop, Terranean Recordings, Aentitainment, Quetzi Records and c.sides.
— Richard Sanderson is an experimental and improvising musician based in London, originally from Middlesbrough in the North East of England. His instrument of choice is the melodeon (diatonic button accordion) although he also plays electronics, toys, guitar and organ. He has recorded with the bands Lost Robots, Minnow, Browne/Thompson/Sanderson, The Horse Trio and Ticklish and in duos with Steve Beresford and Mark Spybey. He runs the experimental label Linear Obsessional Recordings, very occasionally reactivates his 70s post-punk band Drop, and continues to dance with Blackheath Morris Men.
— TLE is an object that organises the sonic flux into compositions. TLE also writes about sound, cyberspace and the practices of everyday life.
— Antye Greie-Ripatti is a digital songwriter, sound composer, poet, curator and educator. She is also known as Laub, AGF and poemproducer. She runs the production company and music label AGF PRODUCKTION and has produced records for other artists, most famously for Ellen Allien (SOOL, 2009, BPitch).
— Yaporigami is a beat orientated music project of Japanese electronic music artist Yu Miyashita. Active since 2005 Miyashita has released numerous recordings including albums, EPs and singles in both physical and digital format on independent labels such as Detroit Underground (US), FF' Space (UA), Hz-records (JP), +Mus (JP) and Stray Landings (UK).
— Fandensk Dolketerapi (roughly translated into "Hellish Stabbing Therapy") is a musical outlet of frustration by Frederik Voss. This is pseudo self therapy at its very worst, trying to harvest unwanted feelings into something meaningful. As he fails achieving this goal a loop of frustration takes shape. The track 'Itureven' was made in collaboration with Perry MacLeod Jensen, who played violin and ukulele as well as aiding with recording and mixing.
— Iris Garrelfs is a sound artist working at the cusp of music, art , technology and sociology. Her practice spans fixed media, installation and performance. Works have featured in major exhibitions, festivals and as part of residencies. Her research at University of the Arts London - where she also lectures on the BA Sound Art and Design - explores the process of complex creative practices, and she is the editor of open-access journal Reflections on Process in Sound.
— Poulomi Desai is a photographic, sound and performance artist. Her current work focuses on ideas of mutable identities in and out of personal and public locations. Commissions and Exhibitions include The Serpentine Gallery, London, The Science Museum, London, The Queens Museum, New York , The Oxford Gallery, Kolkatta, and The Photographers Gallery, London. In 2010, she set up the Usurp Art Gallery and Studios.
— Matthew Collings's work contrasts the crushed guitars and textures of My Bloody Valentine or Sonic Youth with structures more akin to contemporary classical composers like Steve Reich or David Lang. In his powerful live performances, he uses the amplifier as an instrument and the guitar as a control device for innovative digital processes. This music is textural, melodic and often sonically overwhelming.
— Intl. Debris aka Ross Baker is an ambient acoustic artist from the UK. Between 2000 and 2011, Baker mostly recorded as Second Thought. Ran Bullfinch Records. From late 2014, most material has been released as International Debris.
— Cinesthesia is a collaborative platform for live cinematic events bridging the gap between sound and moving image. We curate a diverse programme that includes silent films brought to life by live scores, audio-visual dreamscapes, re-imagined favourites, experimental experiences and edgy live performances. Cinesthesia promises to go from strength to strength, creating engaging, immersive one-off experiences. Cinesthesia is led by Nicolò Cagnini (Antwerp), Mara Marchisio & Tiziano Colombi.
— Isnaj Dui aka Katie English is a flautist working within electroacoustic music. Katie uses concert and bass flutes alongside an effects and looping device as well as home made instruments including the electrodulcimer, a stringed instrument devised by Katie herself. Through studies in electroacoustic music, alternative tunings and Javanese Gamelan as well as her classical work, Katie has fused together many styles to create a unique sound, infusing tranquil melodies with a dark edge.
— Named after an heretical Christian doctrine, Docetism is a Polish solo music project specialising in ambient dub, drone and techno elements. These elements are carefully articulated in order to connote the particular theological, philosophical or literary inspirations of each release.
— Zelienople exist as a unique entry in the pantheon of Chicago musicians pushing the boundaries of genre. The quartet takes basic song-structures and textural palates of folk and rock and infuses them with the spontaneous fluidity of jazz and the shimmering haze of ambient music, emphasizing subtle facets of each genre to create their own individual style. Zelienople is Matt Christensen on guitar and vocals with Mike Weis on drums, Brian Harding on bass, and Donn Ha on keyboards.
— Glacis is Euan Alexander Millar-McMeeken (Graveyard Tapes), a pianist and composer from Edinburgh, Scotland. He has released music on Soft Corridor Records, mini50 Records, Fluid Audio and Tavern Eightieth.
— Sumuposauttaja (shortly SP) was born in a living- room some years ago. It's a one man musical output operating in the world of lo-fi keyboards & c-cassettes. It's private sharing, it's caring, rythms of a secret life. Genre is heart beat, rubbed gently into the face of the world.
— Weith is a Geneva based musician and producer who uses acoustic instruments, field recordings and electronic elements and textures. His first self-titled EP was released by the micro-label Tavern Eightieth and he has contributed with tracks on compilations of EICA Records, Tavern Eightieth and Touched (Music for Macmillan Cancer Support) as well as recieving support from blogs like Commission Magazine and Robot Mafia.
